Referral form for Equine Dental Technicians
Information for Vets and EDTs
This information is for veterinary surgeons and equine dental technicians wishing to refer a patient to the dentistry referral service.
If you are a horse owner please see the “information for horse owners” tab.
The Equine dentistry referral service was set up in 2015 to meet an increasing demand for more specialised equine dentistry treatments.
We feel that oral comfort and health is essential to the overall health and performance of the horse. As our understanding of oral pathology and physiology has increased over the last few years, so too has our capacity to indent and treat these problems.
The service is run by Stuart Altoft who has been seeing dentistry cases on a referral basis for the last 5 years. In 2015 he was awarded the RCVS Certificate of Advanced Veterinary Practice (Equine dentistry)
How the service works
For all referrals please contact the practice on 01297 304007 with the client details and we will make all the necessary arrangements
Please then complete the referral request form (downloadable below) and return it to us by e-mail. It is useful to have as much information as possible so please attach clinical records, dental charts or any other information you feel may be relevant.
Radiographs or other images can be sent by e-mail if digital [email protected]
Your Client will receive discharge instructions with after care instructions and details of further treatment if required.
You will receive a copy of the discharge instructions and a telephone call outlining the outcome of the appointment within 48hrs.
A full written report will be forwarded to you when the initial investigation/treatment is complete. Please be aware dentistry cases may require several appointments. For example Treatment of periodontal disease with hard inter-dental bridging will often take 2-3 treatments. Due to the long sedation lengths required for oral extraction (and the potential risk associated with this) extractions will usually not be carried out at the same time as initial radiographs/investigations.
If you would like to discuss a case please contact the clinic on 01297 304007 or Stuart directly on 07419 778591. We also offer a free radiograph interpretation service. Although e-mailed Jpeg images of digital X rays are often suitable where possible please provide the DICOM image as this provides much more information and will allow a more thorough examination of the radiograph.
We will accept referrals only on an ethical basis after prior contact with referring veterinary surgeons or Equine dental technicians. In the case of referral by an EDT the client’s usual veterinary surgeon must be informed of the problem/referral. We will then contact them before the appointment for full clinical records and will ensure that they receive a copy of the referral report/discharge instructions.
As part of our commitment to ethical referrals we will not provide first opinion veterinary services to any referred client for at least 12 months following referral.
